Dig out your Great War hidden treasures

Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 and Trent to Trenches, a partnership between Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council and Experience Nottinghamshire, will host a major programme of events and activities across the city and county to commemorate this era-defining conflict. The people of Nottinghamshire played a vital role in the war and so to honour the memory of those affected by the conflict a vast number of events across Notts will mark the centenary of the outbreak; click here to see a whole list of programmes. Key Nottinghamshire attractions will get involved with the anniversary, from performances alongside the Southwell Folk Festival to a recreation of a training camp at Sherwood Pines and the Hidden Treasures at Nottingham Castle. In conjunction with the 2014 event at Nottingham Castle, there will be another Hidden Treasures event  at County Hall on Saturday 9 November 2013 from 10am to 3pm. People are being urged to search their attics and garages to check for Great War hidden treasures to bring along, such as trench art, photographs, diaries, letters or memorabilia relating to the Home Front or the various theatres of war. Organised by Trent to Trenches, the event is hoping to unearth a number of unique items that could form  part of the exhibition at Nottingham Castle from July to November next year. A panel of experts will be on hand at County Hall to identify the items as well as representatives from eight museums across the county including Queens Royal Lancers and Sherwood Yeomanry, Mercian Regiment, Newark Air Museum, Retford, Flintham and Ruddington Transport Museum.
