For many Notts folk, the name Kenneth Alan Taylor will always be associated with Nottingham Playhouse pantomimes. After 30 years at the venue, he is Mr Pantomime!
For as long as I can remember, Kenneth has portrayed a dazzling dame at the venue, effortlessly amusing the audience and putting on an astounding performance with numerous ad-libs which always has both the cast and audience in stitches. And this year was certainly no different for the director/ writer/ and performer.
From the word go, the auditorium is filled with festive cheer and the audience are fully included in the show – with many opportunities to shout out “it’s behind you!” and boo and hiss Slurp, the giant’s right hand man. And what would a pantomime be without the audience getting sprayed by water, and a scene in which cream pies are smothered over one of the characters? All I can say is, I am extremely happy I wasn’t sat on the first row.
The scenery was incredible, a massive hats off to designer Tim Meacock. It was everything you would expect from a Playhouse panto, glitter galore! Down to the smallest detail, it was clear to see that a lot of thought and time had gone into the set design, which overall contributed to the fantastic show.
A massive well done is in order to the exquisite musicians at the venue. Year after year their enthusiastic contribution to the pantomime really does show, and I think it’s great that every year the cast take a couple of minutes out of performance time to introduce the audience to them individually. Plus, this year marked a big year for John Morton, MD and keyboard player in the band, as he has been at the venue for 25 years.
Among the highlights for me was the giant dancing rabbits, Kenneth Alan Taylor’s (or should I say Dame Daisy’s) flamboyant costumes, which were changed for every scene, and the encore of Mrs Blunderbore, Danny and Dame Daisy dancing to ‘What Does The Fox Say number. They even managed to get the whole auditorium onto their feet and join in.
Jack and the Beanstalk is on at Nottingham Playhouse until Saturday 18 January 2014, so you still have time to enjoy a spectacular pantomime extravaganza! Adults and children alike, you’re in for a real treat!
