New Byron book launched at Newstead Abbey

A unique book, which explores the relationship between Lord Byron and his beloved dogs, has been officially launched at the poet’s former home, Newstead Abbey.

‘Lord Byron’s Best Friends: From Bulldogs to Boatswain and Beyond’, by Nottinghamshire author Geoffrey Bond, sheds new light on Byron’s close relationships with his dogs.

Geoffrey, who lives in Burgage Manor in Southwell, home to Byron when he was at Harrow School and Trinity College Cambridge, had fellow Byron enthusiast Nick McCann design his book. Highlights include the children’s book, ‘The Wonderful History of Lord Byron and his Dog’ written in 1807 by E.B.Pigot, which is reproduced entirely in colour for the first time.

Geoffrey said: “Lord Byron owned many canine breeds during his lifetime including Bulldogs, Newfoundlands, Mastiffs, Terriers, Greyhounds and even a Poodle. It is through the study of his relationship with these animals, that I hope the reader will gain a greater insight into Byron’s personality and compassion for his animals.”

The launch was attended by members of the Newstead Abbey Lord Byron Society, curator of Newstead Abbey, Haidee Jackson and chief executive of Experience Nottinghamshire, Jennifer Spencer.

Jennifer said: “I’m delighted Geoffrey has chosen Newstead Abbey as a venue for the launch of this unique book.  Byron is one of Nottinghamshire’s best known heroes and his home is an important part of his legacy.

“The house and grounds are a lovely place to visit at any time of the year and the launch of the book will hopefully help to raise the profile of the estate and encourage more visitors to enjoy its beauty.”

The book was offered for sale at the launch with 20% of the takings donated to the Jerry Green Dog’s Home in Blidworth.
