From 26 July – 16 November, visitors are invited along to explore experiences of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire people during the Great War, at home and in the trenches of Northern France. Throughout the exhibition there will be events and activities for all the family, and from 25 July – 29 August, children go FREE at Nottingham Castle!
The major Trent to Trenches Exhibition at Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery will display powerful photographs, diaries, letters and artefacts, including paintings and prints created by official war artists during the conflict, many on loan from local people. Visitors will also be able to get advice on researching their own family’s Great War history each weekend and every Thursday during the exhibition with volunteers on hand to help them.
Highlights of the Trent to Trenches Exhibition will include... Eleven Eleven Eleven and the New Wipers Times.
Eleven Eleven Eleven is an exciting oral histories project in which volunteers have worked with eleven of Nottingham's culturally diverse communities. The project looks at the conflict from a new angle by recording perspectives of the First World War from people whose family memories and personal perspectives tell the story from countries outside Britain.
The New Wipers Times was a renowned trench magazine, published by Nottingham's Sherwood Foresters whilst fighting on the frontlines during the Great War. Artist Carol Adlam and writer Helen Cross has worked with army families from the Mercian Regiment based at Chetwynd Barracks, Nottingham and created a 'graphic anthology' that gives a glimpse of life as an army family today.
Be sure to visit Nottingham Castle on the weekend of 2 & 3 August, as there will be a special launch with living history activities and costumed actors bringing to life the experience of soldiers in the trenches, music of the period and cavalry horses’ role both on and off the battlefield – a great family event, 10am - 4:30pm.
