Turner Prize nominated artist premieres Jangbar at New Art Exchange, Nottingham

New Art Exchange is proud to present the UK launch of leading British visual artist and filmmaker Zarina Bhimji’s new film and sound installation Jangbar (2012/15). This eagerly anticipated piece joins Bhimji’s portfolio of works in film, which includes the critically acclaimed Yellow Patch (2011) and Out of Blue (commissioned for and co-produced by Documenta 11, 2002). Jangbar is an enquiry into image, light, object, the universal, the literal and the abstract. It has grown from observation and ambiguity, yet at other moments it draws from a deep, at times bleak, political consciousness of specific moments. Jangbar brings together a body of work that follows on from other, formal and conceptual strands of Bhimji’s practice. The original intention was that Waiting, Yellow Patch and Jangbar would be one body of work under the title Yellow Patch. In reality, this had to be shot in stages - a series of multilingual mutterings. The sound has been made independently of the film and mounted with great care in the last phase of production. Speaking on behalf of NAE, CEO Skinder Hundal comments on the importance of Zarina Bhimji’s practice and this new commission: ‘New Art Exchange is a contemporary art space based in an inner city neighbourhood, born from immigrant communities, representing the creative narratives of multi-ethnic and globally diverse Britain. The context that defines our destiny is constantly shifting and both history and heritage play an important part in creating complimentary, conflicting and hybrid existences. NAE’s mission is to stimulate new perspectives on the value of diversity in art and society. This is manifested through the inspiration of artists like Zarina Bhimji who in turn stir the conscience and creativity of a new generation of artists. Works like Jangbar offer deeper meaning for new journeys, experiments and expeditions to be born.’ Jangbar joins a number of significant works supported or commissioned by NAE since the venue opened in 2008, each of which has contributed to the organisation’s ongoing mission to stimulate new perspectives on the value of diversity in art and society. These have included Floating Coffins (2009) by Zineb Sedira, The Unfinished Conversation by John Akomfrah (2013), The Current Situation (2014) by Yara El-Sherbini and various works in live art, photography and film by Hetain Patel.
