The Museum of The Horse in finals of the Countryside Alliance Rural Oscars

The Museum of The Horse in Tuxford has become the only Nottinghamshire finalist in the Countryside Alliance Rural Oscars. The winners will be announced in February. The museum has already won a Heritage award and been given Honorary membership of The Club International D’Eperonnerie. It is listed on their website with the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the horse museum in Saumur and the Hermes in Paris. People are talking of it as being of National importance because it is full of amazing things and is the only one of its type in the UK. Recent events held there include a seminar for The British Sporting Art Trust, a seminar for the Carriage Foundation of Great Britain and a wonderful talk by Colin Pawson of coaching fame, on the history of coaches and coach horns, illustrated by him blowing all the calls that were used on the coaches. These would have been heard at the Museum when it was The Newcastle Arms, both a coaching inn and posting house (the place that stabled fresh horses for the coach.) In its day it was an important stop on the Great North Road. Now it is an important destination for anyone interested in our history. After all horses influenced everything we do today. It is proving to be an excellent place for social group visits too, several of which have been held there recently. The museum also organises school visits and schools are welcome to discuss what we have that would fit in with their curriculum. To round off a visit to the museum there is a coffee shop in the courtyard that does great light lunches and cream teas.
