As we’re coming to the end of the January the urge to hibernate is thankfully beginning to fade - it’s time to explore some of Nottingham’s best venues and events and this week is a mixed bag. There’s something for everyone to enjoy, so read on to find out more, then get yourself out and about and try something new for 2017! Etherwave: Adventures with a Theremin Monday 23^rd January, 7.30pm Royal Centre, Theatre square, Nottingham, NG1 5ND You may not immediately know the sound of a theramin, but you will have undoubtedly heard its eerie, atmospheric noisewaves in numerous television, film and electronic soundtracks. This truly unique instrument was first devised in 1928 by Russian inventor Leon Theramin and has racked listeners with goosebumps ever since. For this wonderful one off performance theramin player extraordinaire Hypnotique explores its sounds and influences throughout modern history in a multi-media performance that is sure to beguile. £1 Comedy Night at The Canalhouse Wednesday 25^th January, 7.30pm Canalhouse, 48 - 52 Canal Street, Nottingham, NG1 7EH This regular comedy night at The Canalhouse has earned itself some awards in the past two years and was named Best Open Mic Night at the 2016 Midlands Comedy Awards. A variety of new and established acts grace the stage to try out their gags and get you giggling. Trying some of the vast range of craft beers and ciders from the Canalhouse’s extensive menu is highly recommended. Best of all, it’s just a quid to get in! UNTITLED: Art on the Conditions of our Time 14th January - 19th March 2017 New Art Exchange 39 - 41 Gregory Boulevard, Hyson Green, Nottingham, NG7 6BE New Art Exchange are dedicated to showcasing art from a variety of cultures and backgrounds, and with an regularly updated programme there is always something worth checking out. Their latest offering, UNTITLED: Art on the Conditions of our Time, showcases a leading generation of contemporary African diaspora artists in the UK. A diverse collection of mediums are on show, from painting, drawing and printmaking to performance and film, exploring shifting racial, sexual and gendered identities, to investigations of popular culture, social networks, history and conflict. Glorious! Monday 23 - Saturday 28 January 2017 The Lace Market Theatre Florence Foster Jenkins was a one of a kind musician and dubbed ‘the world’s worst opera singer’ by historian Stephan Pike. But what she lacked in talent she made up for in character and enthusiasm, taking her to the stage of New York’s Carnegie Hall. Recently biographised in a film staring Meryl Streep, this live comedy version was nominated for best new comedy in 2006. Endearing and extraordinary, this is a story that needs to be heard to be believed! Burns Night at Castle Rock Brewery Pubs 25th January Various venues throughout the city To celebrate the birthday of Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns, Castle Rock is offering a taste of traditional Scottish food and drink at various Nottingham pubs. Expect haggis, neeps and tatties and offers on selected Scottish beers and whiskies, all with a dash of special Scottish cheer.
