Following on from last week's blog on where to eat and stay in South Nottinghamshire, we present part two - profiling more of the area's great independent businesses. This week we bring you the best places to pick up delicious local produce (perfect for picnickers and those in self-catering accommodation) and some great alternative days out.

Harker’s Farm Shop (Clipston-on-the-Wolds near Keyworth)
A finalist in the prestigious FARMA Awards (Farmers’ Retail & Markets Association), Harker’s is a gem of local produce in the Nottinghamshire countryside, selling lots of delicious produce including meat, vegetables, delicious sauces, fresh bread, fish, local honey, jams, chutneys, free range eggs, cakes and biscuits… oh my! Tucked away within a working farm, much of the stock is traceable from pasture to plate with the added benefit of very few food miles, and you’ll even find chickens roaming, a play area and lots of farm animals to make your visit a treat for the kids!
Hambleton Bakery (West Bridgford)
…This isn’t just any bakery, this is Hambleton Bakery. With six stores throughout the East Midlands this creative foodie hub has earned somewhat of a cult status in Nottinghamshire, winning numerous awards, and even setting a few world records in their partnership with Bake Off winner Frances Quinn. Using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, their produce is not only delicious, but you won’t find anything like it elsewhere.
Colston Bassett and District Dairy Ltd
Carrying on the theme of scouting out the freshest and most delicious food, we have Colston Bassett and District Dairy. For over 100 years this award winning dairy has been producing an amazing variety of cheese including traditional Stilton cheese and Shropshire Blue cheese. The farm shop in open six days a week.

In the past 30 years the land on which Naturescape Wildflower Farm sits has transformed from two acres of ‘rough and concrete’ to over 70 acres of peaceful meadows, woodland and gardens. Along with demonstrations, information and personal advice, allied to sales of wild flower seeds and plants, the hedges, ponds, flowers and gardens attract an array of wildlife. Within this beauty spot there is a pine cabin tearoom, making it a gorgeous spot to refresh and get back to nature.
If you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie and like a touch of adventure to your countryside stay, make your way to Langar Karting. Not only an indoor karting circuit, you can also try laser clay pigeon shooting, archery, paintball, and more! Options are available for all ages, so all the family can get involved and race it out on the tracks.
Nottinghamshire may be a landlocked county, but with the River Trent, River Leen and a great network of canals there is lots of chance for a jaunt by water. If you want to take in the scenery from a different angle Trent River Cruises offer quality riverboat cruising on The River Trent aboard the Trent Lady and Nottingham Crusader river boats.
