Owthorpe

About

Owthorpe is located south east of Nottinghamshire and forms part of the borough of Rushcliffe.

This sleepy Village was once the home of Hutchinson family, the most famous member of which was John Hutchinson. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642, his defiant stand in preventing the King's men from seizing the county's store of gunpowder effectively secured him the Governorship of Nottingham Castle.

The manor house was demolished in the early 19th century but the old fish ponds and their surrounding trees are still visible in the field to the north of the St Margaret church. On the church is a fascinating monument to the Colonel.
