"The event's mission is to shine a light on homegrown talent giving them a chance to shine on a stage that feels like home…" – Iulia Teodora Matei, Leftlion
We're back for another Spotlight event, welcoming early-career musicians to the stage! This month, we're joined by Lucy Mellenfield a jazz vocalist and songwriter, who will be playing music from her stunning debut album Tell The Water, She Will Listen, Loom, who draw eclectically from folk, experimental and improvised music to help weave together contrasting traditions into new and unfamiliar sound-worlds and Veduna who blend together whimsical and ethereal folk music.
Lucy Mellenfield
"Mellenfield's voice is a remarkable instrument… An adventurous debut" – The Observer (Top 4 Albums of the week)
Lucy Mellenfield began self-releasing music while studying at the University of Southampton, before moving to Birmingham to continue her studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in Jazz Voice. Raised in Hertfordshire, she now resides in the West Midlands, and has just released her stunning debut album Tell The Water, She Will Listen with Birmingham's Stoney Lane Records – a poignant and original studio recording drawing on fragility, love, loss and the turmoil of society over the last five years. 'A doleful epic' (Soweto Kinch, BBC Radio 3).
Produced by Chris Hyson (Snowpoet, Jordan Rakei), the album draws on jazz, folk, interweaving improvisation and folk melodies, with immersive soundscapes and vivid lyric writing. Released in January 2026, Tell The Water, She Will Listen has already received recognition from the likes of The Observer, BBC Radio 3 and BBC West Midlands.
The album is released following Lucy's first full UK tour with her band last summer, taking in London, Birmingham, Newcastle, Leeds, Southampton and Brighton, alongside festival highlights spanning the Cheltenham Jazz Festival to HowTheLightGetsIn. Weaved meticulously throughout an adventurous sonic landscape, featuring keyboards, guitars, saxophones, drums, bass, Lucy's writing on the record captures some of the deepest emotions and marked experiences from her life in recent years.

She regularly commissions new pieces and contributes to contemporary recorder publications, expanding how the instrument is used today.
Jonno Gaze is a percussionist, composer and improviser living in Birmingham, UK. He has collaborated with artists such as Deepa Shakthi, Germa Adam and Didier Kisala and groups including Tephra, Abyssal and Dreamscapes alongside leading his own trio and quintet – with notable performances at The Royal Albert Hall, Glastonbury Festival and Birmingham Symphony Hall.
