"I’ve always loved visiting the area north of the county with my two sons as they grew up, with Newstead Abbey, Rufford Park and Sherwood Pines being particular favourites. Newstead has always been special, which not only has the wonderful Abbey but also its hugely varied grounds and formal landscapes with secret places to explore, like under the waterfall and the distant Japanese garden. There is always plenty to see and do at Rufford Park and I’ve spent many happy Sundays wandering through the ancient monastery, enjoying the public art scattered around the grounds and visits to the craft centre. A walk passed the lake takes you to the spot where cars raise a spray as they drive through the ford to the delight and encouragement of the watching crowd. Sherwood Pines offers a contrast of scale and adventure with its sweeping avenues and its towering trees through which to enjoy cycle rides, the climbing centre that caters for all ages and aptitudes and the children’s playground that all make the most of their impressive surroundings."
