County museums and archives are award winners

Nottinghamshire Museums, archives and heritage sites were announced as award winners at the Nottinghamshire Heritage Awards ceremony held at the Lakeside Arts Centre, University of Nottingham on 18th July 2012.

The ceremony celebrated the work of museums and heritage collections throughout the county, with Nottingham Industrial Museum winning Heritage Site of the Year.

The Awards, organised by Nottinghamshire Heritage Forum and sponsored by Nottingham Trent University, are in their fifth year, recognising excellence in museums and heritage across the county. 

The 2012 winners are:

Best Event 2012

Winner: Mansfield Museum for The Nightshift Tours

Highly Commended Entry: Harley Gallery and Museum for Bompas and Parr’s ‘Taste O Rama’

Best Exhibition 2012

Winner: Mansfield Museum for Mansfield Metal Box Exhibition

Inspiration Award for Best Special Project 2012

Winner: Nottinghamshire Archives for Gertrude Savile’s Twitter Diary

Highly Commended Entry: Bilsthorpe Heritage Society for Miners’ Memorial for those who died at Bilsthorpe pit

Work with Children and Young People 2012

Winner: Bilsthorpe Heritage Society for Miners’ Memorial project

Collections Care and Development 2012

Winner: Access Artefacts, Nottingham City Museums and Galleries and Loans Service for Galleries to go...!

Heritage Site of the Year 2012

Speaking on behalf of the judging panel, Dr Kevin Gould, Principal Lecturer in Late Medieval and Early Modern History at  Nottingham Trent University, said: "The awards entries really reflect the excellence in Nottinghamshire's heritage and the great work that goes into caring for it and enabling people to enjoy it. Choosing the winners from such a strong field has been an extremely difficult task."

Notes for Editors:

The Nottinghamshire Heritage Awards showcase and celebrate the work of heritage organisations of all types and sizes in Nottinghamshire and the staff and volunteers that run them. They are organised by the Nottinghamshire Heritage Forum with sponsorship provided by Nottingham Trent University.

Support in kind is being provided by: the University of Nottingham's Lakeside Arts Centre, which is hosting the awards ceremony; Culture Syndicates (a consortium of recent graduates from Nottingham Trent University's Heritage Management Course); and Museum Development East Midlands (funded through Arts Council England's Renaissance programme).

The awards were judged by an independent panel from the fields of heritage, academia, media and tourism. 

Nottinghamshire Heritage Forum is a body that works to support, develop and promote museums and heritage collections in the county. It acts as a shared voice for its members and seeks to work with other organisations involved in supporting the sector, representing members’ needs and the opportunities they can provide. The forum is working hard to promote the county's history and heritage.
