A top Nottingham attraction will enjoy a very special role in this summer’s most anticipated blockbuster, The Dark Knight Rises, when it appears onscreen as Wayne Manor.

Wollaton Hall, the historic Elizabethan mansion in Nottingham, was chosen as a key filming location for the new Christopher Nolan film, and will be used for many of the external shots of the ‘rebuilt’ Wayne Manor in the film, due in UK cinemas on Friday 20 July.

Filming took place at Wollaton Hall in July 2011, with the cast and crew of the film descending on Nottingham’s most loved historic hall, including Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine.

A number of scenes were filmed in the grounds and Hall, including a garden party scene at night which features in the film’s trailer. A graveyard was also constructed in the grounds for the filming, and a number of internal refurbishments were made to the Hall to create the perfect Wayne Manor.

Jennifer Spencer, Chief Executive of Experience Nottinghamshire, said the filming was a real coup for tourism in Nottingham:

“Wollaton Hall is already a must-see destination in Nottinghamshire, and the release of the new Christopher Nolan film will only increase the site’s profile and popularity. We’ve seen from other sites around the country that film tourism can have a very positive impact.”

Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said:

“I am really delighted that this incredible opportunity has come Nottingham’s way. Wollaton Hall and Deer Park is already one of Nottingham’s most popular visitor attractions, with over 200,000 visits each year. With the launch of the film we are anticipating lots more visitors to Nottingham from around the world over the coming months and years which is great news for the city’s economy.”

Wollaton Hall and Deer Park is managed by Nottingham City Council, and will host a number of Batman-themed events over the coming year to celebrate its new role.

Special tours of Wollaton Hall are being planned along with a Superhero Family Picnic Day on Monday 6 August. A bouncy castle and entertainment are on offer, and children are encouraged to dress as their favourite superhero. Further activities are planned for later in the year.
