Guest post: We caught up with Mark Stretton from Cartwright Communications to find out about the new production at Lakeside Arts Centre: Inside Out of Mind.
It’s the play that has got everyone talking on the Nottingham theatre scene and beyond.
Inside Out of Mind is a production at Lakeside Arts Centre which explores the realities of a dementia ward and has been created through a unique collaboration of healthcare professionals and theatre producers.
Sound depressing? Certainly not. It’s a performance which is powerful, affecting and at times hilarious.
The play is presented by theatre company, Meeting Ground and Lakeside Arts Centre. It is a production which has taken real-life research material from dementia wards in the Midlands – and turned it into a truly innovative and eminently watchable play.
Tanya Myers, the production’s writer and director, worked with professor Justine Schneider who led the research with researchers Simon Bailey, Joanne Lloyd and Kezia Scales.
Inside Out of Mind has taken three years to evolve from the research material. It is aimed at illustrating what life is like on a dementia ward – from the point of view of patients, staff and visitors.
Myers used the extensive case notes in dementia wards to inspire the play about dementia and the caring environment.
The play was commissioned by social scientists as a way of making their findings more accessible to those involved in the healthcare sector – as well as the general public.
This is a production that it’s impossible to walk away from and not have a reaction to. It is incredibly atmospheric and is wonderfully performed by an ensemble cast of superb actors.
Is it the best play to come out of Nottingham for some time? There’s only one way to find out.
