Visitors can save a lot of money by making Nottingham their destination for a weekend break, a survey has revealed. According to travel site Trip Advisor the city is ranked as number one in the UK for a luxury break that won't pull too hard on the purse strings.

The findings were based on the cost of an evening out and overnight stay at a four star hotel for two. Expenses included a cocktail, a meal out and taxis during the month of August.

An evening out and overnight stay in a four star hotel in Nottingham for two will knock you back £164.73, nearly half the price of a break in the UK’s most expensive city Edinburgh, which costs £298.46.

When it comes to hotel prices across the 20 cities, Edinburgh has the most expensive average rate for a four-star hotel room, coming in at £207.51. For the price of one night in a hotel in Edinburgh, travellers can have nearly three nights in a Nottingham hotel.

Jennifer Spencer, chief executive of tourism group Experience Nottinghamshire, said the news would boost the number of visitors.

She said: "This news will help to raise the profile of Nottingham as a short-break destination, ideal for people looking to enjoy an affordable UK break. Nottingham's appeal as a city break is thanks to our competitively priced hotels and restaurants, and the welcoming environment when people get here."

Tom Waldron Lynch, manager of the Park Plaza Hotel, said the news was another feather in the city's cap.

He said: "It's excellent news that it now tops the rankings for providing good value. It will help to put the city on the radar of more people and encourage more visitors so they can enjoy all that we have to offer."

“With the great summer we’ve been enjoying, staycations are sure to be a popular choice for UK travellers over the August bank holiday, but where you go will have a big impact on how much you’re likely to spend. Generally, the further north you go the less you’ll need to fork out for hotels and dinner, but there are some notable exceptions to that rule, so make sure you plan ahead,” commented TripAdvisor spokesperson James Kay.
