Today is the 100 day mark to Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, taking place 7 – 23 February 2014. Elise Christie trains with the GB squad at Nottingham Ice Arena and moved to Notts when she was 15. She is the British number one Short Track Speed Skater, and was world ranked one in 1000m following her success in the 2012/2013 season. Elise won a bronze medal at the World Championships 2013, and is now training and competing ahead of the Winter Olympics. Elise kindly took some time out of her busy training schedule to reveal some of her favourite Notts spots... I moved to Nottingham aged 15 after being invited to join the GB Short Track Speed Skating team. I relocated from a small town in Scotland, so living in Nottingham was very different from what I was used to! I am now 23 years old and have come to know Nottingham very well and want to share with you the parts I love.  Wollaton Park - credit Gerry MolumbyOne of my favourite places to relax and get fresh air is Wollaton Park. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Nottingham as is a nice place to go all year round. Where else can you see wild deer walking right past you? There are 500 acres of park to explore with a large lake and the very grand Wollaton Hall, which starred as Wayne Manor in The Dark Knight Rises film. The park is brilliant for having a picnic in the summer and it’s also a great place to go for a run as there are many different routes to take. The winter is even better because on the off chance it snows, it is a brilliant place to go sledging.    Now, a few sporting thoughts: National Water Sports CentreDefinitely worth a visit is the National Water Sports Centre (Holme Pierre Point). I’ve used the facilities there for weight training; however I have also visited here to cycle and take part in wake-boarding which was great! It’s a beautiful area with lots of lovely walks and lakes and can be a lot of fun because of the variety of water sports. I did try water skiing once but this was NOT very easy; I didn’t get past the take-off point because I kept falling face first in.  For indoor activity I would recommend ice skating of course. Nottingham is home of the National Ice Centre, and is where I train day in and day out. There is something for every one of all ages; from beginner skating, ice discos and speed skating, to ice hockey and concerts. I’d suggest taking part in a speed skating lesson for those who like an adrenaline buzz. It really is a place where you can skate by day and watch a live concert by night.  After a fun packed day, I would recommend heading to Central Avenue in West Bridgford. It is situated just outside of the city centre, and there are plenty of places to have a lovely dinner from the Oriental Pearl to the new Mud Crab Diner. I have tried a few of the top restaurants in Nottingham but I like a lot of places in West Bridgford because it’s not over-priced and the food is very good value.   Elise Christie - credit Michael PooleElise is an ambassador for Right to Play.
