Anyone who has ever had a hero will no doubt be able to relate to the protagonist of My Judy Garland Life, which opens at Nottingham Playhouse at the end of this month. Based on the autobiographical memoir by acclaimed author Susie Boyt, My Judy Garland Life has been adapted for the stage by Amanda Whittington and highlights the joy and heartache that come from hero-worship. It tells the story of a young girl who grows up under the spell of Judy Garland. Consumed by the passion and the pain of Judy Garland’s voice, the troubled film star becomes someone whom the young Susie can relate to and confide in. Cast in the role of Judy Garland is musical theatre star Sally Ann Triplett who is a fan of Judy Garland herself. She has appeared in numerous West End productions including Cats, Chicago and Guys and Dolls. Speaking about her role in My Judy Garland Life, Sally Ann said: “I always knew I wanted to perform from a very early age and my parents would sit me down in front of the telly any time an MGM film was on, so my love for Judy began a long time ago. It’s a time in history I wish I had been born in and so it feels almost full circle to be playing the lady herself. It’s a daunting task but something I am incredibly excited about.” Meanwhile, Kath Rogers, director of My Judy Garland Life, said: “I’m so excited to be working on this extraordinary new play, which is a completely original take on the Judy Garland story. “We see Judy’s life through the eyes of a young girl who seeks solace in the songs we know and love. And we’re delighted to have one of our best-loved musical theatre stars in the title role. Her joy, heart and spirit will bring Judy spectacularly to life at Nottingham Playhouse. We’re over the moon – and the rainbow – to have her.” To complement My Judy Garland Life, Nottingham Playhouse is also presenting another of Amanda Whittington’s plays, Amateur Girl, in partnership with Fifth Word Theatre. The play, which will be shown in the Neville Theatre from 3rd to 8th February, is a hard-hitting, poignant and yet amusing piece about the fantasy business. My Judy Garland Life opens on 31st January and runs until 15th February. For further details visit Nottingham Playhouse’s website.
