MEDIA RELEASE: Nottingham, 18th March 2014

Experience Nottinghamshire is delighted that a cocktail inspired by its county has been chosen by VisitEngland to celebrate English Tourism Week (29th March – 6th April).  The Bramley Apple Martini was created by the Ned Ludd, Friar Lane, Nottingham especially for the annual celebration and helps tell the story of Nottinghamshire.

The Bramley Apple Martini has its roots in the 19th century – the first Bramley tree grew from pips planted by a young girl in Southwell, Nottinghamshire – and its spirit firmly in today, showcasing the gastro-revolution gripping the city. The juice and puree come from local purveyor John Starkey, whose family has grown the fruit on the Norwood Park estate for nearly 100 years. Nottingham is a city renowned for nurturing bold, creative figures including DH Lawrence, Lord Byron, fashion designer Paul Smith and world-wide music phenomenon, Jake Bugg. The Bramley Apple Martini provides the kind of witty, sweet-and-sour punch they would fully appreciate.

Jennifer Spencer, Chief Executive, Experience Nottinghamshire, said: “We are thrilled that VisitEngland has chosen the Bramley Apple Martini as part of the English Tourism Week celebrations.  The Ned Ludd opened in Nottingham city centre in October 2013 and has helped us to tell the story of Nottinghamshire by creating this inspiring cocktail using the unique Bramley Apple.   It is one of only six cocktails around the country which has been selected by VisitEngland to celebrate English Tourism Week.”

Dave Willans, owner of The Ned Ludd, added: “This thoroughly English version of a Martini is made using Bramley apples grown in the beautiful orchards of Southwell, Nottinghamshire. Their original Bramley tree is now over 200 years old and was planted the year before the Luddite Rebellion and the meteoric rise of Ned Ludd in the city.  The taste is sweet apple and spice with real hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. It’s creamy smooth and easy to drink and it’s not just a cocktail, it’s a little bit of history - with added vodka!”
