In the pretty village of Kelham, just outside Newark, stands Kelham Hall, a magnificent, red-brick building made up of towers and turrets and surrounded by 42 acres of landscaped gardens. Once the home of the Manners-Sutton family, the distinctive hall was designed by the acclaimed architect Sir George Gilbert Scott and its interior is just as impressive; grand corridors give way to rooms decorated with intricate paintings, oak panels and carved stone work. For much of the 20th century it was a theological college for an Anglican Order of Monks and visitors can find out about its rich heritage during one of the hall tours which take place every Sunday.
