Stars of Team GB set to compete to become national champion in Nottinghamshire

One of the sports that Great Britain has excelled in in recent years is rowing. Our athletes have captured the imagination of the public on many occasions recently, claiming great medal hauls and casting aside opposition from all over the world. This weekend, Nottinghamshire is privileged to welcome the Team GB stars to Holme Pierrepont Country Park, home of the National Water Sports Centre for the 2014 British Rowing Senior Championships. Many well known faces will be making an appearance including gold medalists Helen Glover MBE, Andrew Triggs Hodge MBE and Pete Reed MBE. And unlike any other occasion, this is an event where we see GB stars going head to head to decide who will be crowned national champion. It's set to be a competitive weekend for the athletes. International athletes as well as rowing clubs from all over the country will come together to compete. The annual event states that any athlete hoping to compete for team GB in 2015 must compete on at least one of the two days, while funded athletes must compete both days. This means you're bound to see some of the nations rowing stars in action and who knows, you might be watching a future Olympic gold medalist. Greg Searle, MBE, Olympian extraordinaire and Patron of the Senior Championships said: "This international season has been a stellar one for the GB squad with four golds, four silvers and two bronzes at the World Rowing Championships in August - and who can forget that exciting men’s eight’s race for gold? With only two years to Rio 2016, these Championships are a real opportunity for the best athletes in the UK to compete against each other. International oarsmen representing their clubs at a British regatta can only be good for the sport and it is an excellent way to identify and develop new talent.” Of course this event is fantastic for Holme Pierrepont Country Park, home to the National Water Sports Centre. The event returns again to the banks of its superb facilities to test the waters and showcase the best of the nations rowing talent to the local community. Speaking about the event the park's resort manager Andrew Keen said: “We are extremely excited to once again be the chosen venue for the British Rowing Senior Championships. It is a great event to come and watch and we hope to see lots of the Nottingham community coming down to support the GB squad.” Tickets for the event are priced at £5 per day for adults and £1 per day for children, guaranteeing you value for money over both days. Races take place between 9am - 5pm on Saturday, and 8.30am - 4.30pm on Sunday, so there's plenty of action to whet the rowing appetite. Competitors will initially race a time trial over 1,900 metres followed by exciting six-lane racing over the full 2000 metres course. Para-athletes will time trial over 1,000 metres, followed by 2,000 metres side-by-side finals, with finals being held on both days. The Championships are open to rowers in Open, Lightweight, Under 23 and Under 19 categories and they will race in boats from Double Sculls through to Eights. Para-rowing also has a Single Scull category. The ultimate winner will be decided on the Sunday by looking at the most successful club over the two days based on their results. The prize for the winners is the prestigious Victor Ludorum trophy. And, while you're at the event, make sure you visit the many stalls dotted around the bank for food and drink as well as the restaurant and bar on site for a warm cuppa during race time. And if you have little ones with you, visit the new Family Fun Park with its Sky Trail, Mini Golf and cafe.
