Get ready for a fun-filled weekend around Sherwood

In the spring-time, the Sherwood Forest area really comes into its own with plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy. In today's guest blog, Deborah Hibbert, from the Rufford Tourist Information Centre, gives us the low-down on what you can look forward to.  There is lots happening this weekend so get out and about and experience it for yourself. Rufford Country Park, pictured top, is playing host to the Grand Historical & Vintage Bazaar on Saturday and Sunday, a historical 'bring and buy sale' with lots of re-enactors dressed in costumes from different eras. Bring along those unwanted historical or historically-themed items and sell, swap or even give them away. There will be lots of things on sale including vintage clothing, games, uniforms and militaria. It’s sure to be a fun weekend for all the family. Please note that car parking will be £5 both days. The RSPB will be in Sherwood Forest Country Park over the weekend. Join them early (7am) on Saturday morning for a Redstart Ramble, a gentle wander through the ancient woodland of Sherwood in search of the beautiful Redstart (a type of bird). You will need to book as places are limited so please call (01623) 823202. Adults are £5 and children under 12yrs £3 but it isn’t suitable for young children or wheelchairs users. Visitors are also being informed that no dogs are allowed. On Sunday the RSPB will be on hand to tell you all about the birds in your garden and how you can get involved in the Give Nature a Home campaign. It’s lambing time in Clumber Park this weekend with a chance to see the new born lambs. Pop along to Hardwick Village in the park between 11am and 4pm and see the new additions. It costs £1 per child to see the lambs and £6.80 per car. If you fancy stretching your legs on Sunday why not join the guided walk from Lidgett (Edwinstowe) to Rufford Country Park? This 5.5 mile walk starts in Edwinstowe, follows the railway line to Rainworth Water and on to Rufford Country Park. Meet at 11am at South Forest, Edwinstowe, NG21 9JA. For full details visit the Notts Guided Walks website. There are also a number of gardens open on Sunday as part of the National Garden Scheme. The Beeches in Milton, (NG22 0PW) is a 1 acre garden full of colour with unusual and rare plants. There is also a large vegetable garden on raised beds. Capability Barn can be found in the village of Hoveringham (NG14 7JH). There are lots of Spring flowers on show including azaleas, orchard apple blossom and wisteria. Admission is £3 to each garden and full details can be found on the website. Sunday is the day for BBC Radio Nottingham’s Big Day Out with free admission into a number of heritage sites in Nottinghamshire. Take the opportunity to visit the Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum and see models of the heavy machinery used in collieries. The volunteers will be on hand to show you round and explain the history. Join Stuart Rose on a three-hour guided walk around the heritage village of Laxton and learn all about the medieval farming history of this special village.
