To coincide with this year’s anniversary of 250 years of circus, The Harley Gallery at Welbeck Estate are currently exhibiting Circus Work by Peter Lavery. This exhibition showcases a selection of 50 years of work which presents important examples of human and social documentation. We went along to understand the purpose of Lavery’s project and to simply enjoy his intriguing creations.

It is easy to approach such an exhibition with a preconception, circus equals clowns, right? Fun, perhaps a little scary to look at, some show girls and perhaps a ringmaster or two? These intimate photos go beyond that. Peter Lavery, renowned for his career as an advertising photographer, spent 50 years of his life following circuses around Britain - living rough to do so. The outcome is an insight into a world beyond the normal everyday.

The images focus on the show performers away from the stage and instead capture them in their down time, sometimes rehearsing. Living ordinarily, within their extraordinary lives. Without explanation, the photographs present a bizarre and wonderful world – just one example portrays a man seemingly relaxing whilst wearing a bear suit.

Aesthetically it is easy to see Lavery’s career as a commercial photographer. The clean, bright and seductive images draw you in. Whether a fan of circus, a photography buff or interested in understanding a culture and world outside of your own, this show will certainly please. Equally, a great one to share with the children, who will particularly enjoy taking their photo in the circus selfie zone. And ok, I may have posed as a strong-woman but why not?

Circus Work is on until 15 April. Whilst there spend some time browsing the award-winning gift shop and stop by the Welbeck Farm Shop to pick up a freshly baked loaf- I highly recommend the Sourdough.
