The Nottingham Poetry Festival

Various Venues

Friday 20 - Sunday 29 April 2018

As a UNESCO City of Literature and home to some pretty impressive historical wordsmiths, Nottingham is quickly becoming known for its literary links and local talent. It so follows that the hype around this city-wide festival has increased each year, and we are sure that the slick line-up of events will not disappoint any of you hungry for a poetic fix.

This weekend you can check out some workshops for young people and children at the National Videogame Arcade, or see poet and writer Henry Normal (largely known for his hugely successful TV production company Baby Cow Productions which he began with Steve Coogan in 1999) at Hucknall and Mansfield Library as part of his Poetry Hour events, but there are lots more events to explore during the week.

Whether you are a visitor to Nottingham or fancy being a tourist in your own city, The Big Day Out is a great reason to go and check out those grand houses and curious attractions that you have never quite got around to. Organised by BBC Nottingham, the day offers free entry, special offers and taster sessions at an array of fascinating heritage attractions that work to preserve the history in the county.

Knit your own souvenir at Ruddington’s Framework Knitters Museum, attend a free public mock trial at The National Justice Museum, or take a free wander round Nottingham Castle before it closes for its grand redevelopment! There’s lots more to see and do, so we recommend a good browse of all the events which can be viewed here.

Record Store Day

The Malt Cross
Saturday April 21st 2018 | 10am - 6:30pm

With exclusive releases and live events up and down the country, this annual day is a bit like Christmas for many music lovers (except you have to buy your own presents). If you fancy spending your Saturday immersed in new tunes, head down to the Malt Cross where DJs will be spinning records all day and Plates Records will be selling rarities and imports in their pop up shop.

There are many more delightful features to check out at this historic Victorian music hall. Did you know that all profits from the kitchen and bar go back into the charitable Malt Cross Trust to help keep the city’s nightlife safe? Sounds like a good excuse for a delicious Saturday pub lunch too…

Cutting Edge: The Changing Tools of War

National Civil War Centre
Thursday 29 March - Thursday 1 November 2018

With live re-enactments, amazing exhibits and buckets of historical knowledge, Newark’s National Civil War Centre does a fantastic job of showcasing the turbulent civil war era of England. The latest exhibition at the centre looks at the evolution of armour and tools in warfare, presenting the transition from traditional suits of armour to more sophisticated weaponry. Test your strength by trying on a ‘weightscoat’, study Thomas Fairfax's sword, and discover more about this deadly conflict.

Murder Mystery Night

National Justice Museum
Saturday 21 April 2018 | 7pm

Having had the pleasure of taking part in a treasure hunt around the cells during their recent John Carpenter Film Season, we are in no doubt that a murder mystery night at the National Justice Museum will be an absolute hoot. Beginning in the courtroom (which has been the backdrop for hundreds of years of dramatic real life law and order) you will witness a live trial before descending into the jail below to hunt for clues and interrogate suspects. The night concludes with a two course dinner to enjoy while you speculate on your sleuthing, before the big whodunnit reveal.
