Here’s a selection of some of my favourite places in my adopted hometown. I’ve included quite a few independent shops – As I discovered while making SOUND IT OUT small shops play a vital role at the heart of a community. Back row, screen 1, Broadway Cinema I went to Broadway in my very first week in Nottingham and I started working behind the bar a year later. My company Glimmer Films is now based there and I’m on the board of directors. Broadway really means a lot to me, I didn’t go to film school but I feel that being in and around Broadway has been a film education. From meeting fellow film makers, hearing directors present their work and most important of all curling up on the glorious pink seats of screen 1 seeing a film. J T Beedham Butchers in Sherwood   As a reformed vegetarian I’m always interested in trying new food. This Polish butchers is jaw droppingly good. Knowledgable staff, locally sourced meat and delicious sausages. Marmite and black pudding anyone? Thompson Brothers Green Grocers, Haydn Road. Best for banter and fresh veg, a proper green grocers run by verbose identical twins. The Music Exchange The whole of the West End Arcade is worth perusing and The Music Exchange is a glorious vinyl haven in the city centre, run by homeless charity Framework, supporting local artists. Bromley House Library A hidden gem of a private library tucked away on Angel Row.   Golden Fleece, Mansfield Road Consistently good for papers and Sunday lunch Asiana Hypermarket,  For hard to find Japanese food and ingredients. Adnan Indian & Sweets, Berridge Road   The best somosas in Nottingham Desi Express   For Friday night takeaway – chicken bahari cooked on an open fire and Desi downtown for when you fancy tandoori paneer. Sat Bains For imaginative dining that you’ll remember the taste of years later. Paul Smith Tape measure stairs and decor that is imaginative as the clothing. Frock Vintage feel dresses off the peg or remade for you. Nothing like a weekend walk –   Wollaton Hall for the lake, taxidermy hall and glass jellyfish Beeston Marina in the frost  Nottingham Castle for a view across the city. Camera obscura at Rufford ParkPaul Smith Auditorium at Broadway Cinema Wollaton Park by Gerry Molumby
