Located in the historic Lace Market, known as the Creative Quarter, Debbie Bryan’s Studio & Shop is a hidden city gem. Away from the high street shops and big brand names, her unique shop is the perfect place to go if you are looking for exquisite collections from hand-crafted jewellery and accessories to beautiful items of home-ware and ceramics. And now, following a recent trip to Eunique, an International Fair for Applied Arts and Design which takes place in Nottingham’s twin city, Karlsruhe, Germany, Debbie is thrilled to stock work in her shop by eight European designers, as well as having her own work on sale at two gallery shops in Karlsruhe. Debbie has been visiting Eunique for four years now, and it all started back in 2011 when she and two friends, who are also local designers, Hannah Lobley and Jayne Childs, set up the Creative Twinning project – an initiative to expand the creative and cultural exchange between the twin cities of Nottingham and Karlsruhe. Over the years, the group have been supported by Future Factory at Nottingham Trent University, Projector at Broadway, Design Factory, Nottinghamshire City Council, One Nottingham, Creative Quarter and enormously by Karlsruhe City Council. Their presence at the exhibition has always been well received, as the international visitors love that their Made in Nottingham products which are so unique. The support from Karlsruhe City Council has also led to an exchange programme being formed, and just recently Debbie and her friends hosted the third inward visit from three German designers on a visit to Nottingham. They were all overwhelmed by the sights of the Lace Archive at Nottingham Trent University, Rufford Abbey, Harley Gallery and Welbeck Estate, Cobden Chambers and Broadway. In fact, Debbie tells me, the positive feedback has left more Karlsruhe creatives wanting to sign up and visit the twin city of Nottingham. New to her St Mary’s Gate shop are pieces of hand blown glassware, screen printed stoneware, leather notepads, quirky accessories and jewellery by European designers exclusive to Debbie’s shop, with several collections not available anywhere else in the UK. From the exhibition, Debbie formed a professional friendship with two European designers - Jeweller, Leonore Jock, and Ceramist, Jutta Becker. Apparently, both designers only stock their own work in their shop and so Debbie was over-the-moon when they made plans to product-swap and stock each others work at their shops. Leonore’s shop is in the suburbs of Karlsruhe in an area known locally as the Artist Village, whereas Jutta is based in the city centre, in an cool up-and-coming area, so much so like the Lace Market. So, people from different walks of life will be able to purchase Debbie's own signature scarves and brooches.
