There's plenty to when you stay with Teversal Camping and Caravanning Club

Located in the heart of the beautiful Nottinghamshire countryside and surrounded by great visitor attractions, cycle routes, walking trails and much more, it's no wonder that Teversal Camping and Caravanning Club's site is a popular choice for those seeking the perfect escape. Whether you prefer to pitch up a tent, park a caravan or fancy something more luxurious, this site offers everything you need. We've been chatting to Jayne Woods, Director at the Teversal site, about what visitors can expect.  Teversal Camping and Caravanning Club Site is now one of the most well-established and popular campsites in the country. Can you tell me what facilities you have to offer? Grass with electric, hardstanding with electric and super service pitches. Children’s play area and ball games field. Shop on site selling newspapers, local produce (bread, jams,  meat), ice creams and camping accessories. Amenity block – shower rooms with own toilet and sink in the men’s and women’s, family room with baby bath, laundry, disabled facility, dishwashing and chemical points. Service areas for water, bins and recycling and Motorhome service point. Self-catering options- static caravan, and two glamping options – safari tent and cabin. When was the campsite set up and how has it grown over the years? We have been at the site for over eight years and in that time we have made significant changes, including children’s play area, motorhome service point, service areas, larger pitches, introduction of glamping units. We have a lot of repeat business and many of the people try us on recommendation from friends and other campers. Our toilet block which we built 5 years ago has won us awards and we people tell us that they have heard about the showers at Teversal whilst camping across Europe. What attractions and activities are there in the local area? Directly opposite the site is Silverhill Wood and access to miles of trails for walking and cycling. Hardwick Hall is only a few miles away. Chesterfield and Mansfield are popular because you can access them by bus from the site and customers enjoy visiting the markets there. Crich Tramway museum is a popular attraction as are the Heights of Abraham. Customers also visit Nottingham, travelling in by tram for shopping and the city centre attractions. Also Sherwood Forest visitor centre and Sherwood Pines are popular day trips. Teversal is a favourite spot with cyclists. Why do you think this might be? The cycling from Teversal can be made as easy or difficult as you like. It is suitable for all the family. The trails are accessed directly across the road from the site. We have 11 guided walks and cycle routes from site which vary from 1mile to 30 miles and they are all on trails or quiet roads. Visitor centres on the routes provide welcome refreshments – they are located at Teversal and Brierley Forest.  A 6 mile circular route from site via Pleasley Pit is a popular choice and customers can enjoy a tour of the renovated colliery site. A new bike park has been built at Brierley Forest, just 3 miles from site, accessed again all on trails, provides entertainment for adrenaline junkies. I understand that the site is close to the highest man-made point in Nottinghamshire. Could you tell me a bit more about it? Yes, the site is directly opposite the highest point in Nottinghamshire. A walk to the top takes less than 15 minutes. At the top you can see 5 counties and a statue of a miner. There are information plaques at the top with information about Siverhill Pit, the statue and Silverhill Wood, the area turned into parkland following the closure of the pit. There is also a ‘compass’ which points out the features that you can see from the top, these include Lincoln Cathedral in the east and Crich Stand in the west What is there for people who don’t want to ‘rough it’ in a tent? For the non-campers, we have three self-catering options. Our luxury six berth caravan has a lounge and kitchen area, twin bedroom, bathroom and master bedroom with ensuite. This is open all year round and we allow pets in the unit too. We have a  camping cabin, also open all year round – more of a ‘Hobbit’s’ house this is a quirky addition to our self-catering. The cabin sleeps 4+2 and has a kitchen area, living area and large decking for BBQs. The Safari tent is erected between May and September. This is a great introduction to camping but there is no ‘roughing’ it! The tent sleeps 4 people in 2 bedroom areas. There is a kitchen and seating area and large deck for bbqs. The tent is well equipped with proper beds, electric lighting and a domestic fridge/freezer. Does the campsite host any events? Yes, we have a number of events each year; these include:

• Coach Trips – this year we are going to Matlock Illuminations and Fireworks at the end of September and Chatsworth House in November for their Christmas market and decorated house. Campers on these trips are looked after throughout the trip including return coach travel from site and entrance to the event.
• Seasonal events – the Spooky Night Hike is a popular event for families camping over Halloween. Last year over 50 people joined us for a night hike in the woods. Plans are afoot to make this an unforgettable way to celebrate Halloween!! We are open all year and we see each New Year in at the highest point in Nottinghamshire – bring a bottle of bubbly to crack open and watch a 360 degree firework display from the top!
• Guided bike rides and walks – we often organise a guided bike ride or walk for customers on site to introduce them to the trails. Suitable for all ages from babies in bike carriers to grandparents on electric bikes, this is a fun way to get to know your camping neighbours and find your way around the trails.

Describe some of your favourite moments of running the site. Whatever we can do to make the physical appearance of the site win awards, it is the people who make the site what it is. We have had a baby born and many couples on honeymoon, families enjoying each other’s company and the retired generation who want to chat away in the office, we have lots of foreign visitors too who are on their way to Scotland – we have had Swiss chocolate, German wine and a Dutch clog as presents from them! Do you think camping has increased in popularity in recent years? Why do you think this might be? Camping has certainly changed in recent years. We are seeing people take more frequent short breaks and not travelling very far for their holiday. Most of our customers only live an hour’s drive away. People want to enjoy their leisure time but are more cautious with their money so camping provides the perfect option, you can even bring all your food with you – it’s a home from home without the jobs! Finally, what would you say to someone who has never taken a camping holiday before – and who may be a little nervous? Come and give us a try. Every weekend we have people arriving who are new to it. They want to try things and be close to home in case of emergencies. Pick a sunny few days and not a bank holiday weekend so we can give you all the help you need to enjoy your inaugural trip.
