I knew that George's had recently re-branded to highlight their yummy great British menu, and that they'd introduced a British tapas option, so there seemed like no better time to go. Booking is really important - this place is sooo popular, and you'd hate to get to the door and be told that there's a waiting time.
Sipping a chilled Kir Royale at the bar, surrounded by stunning high ceilings, glistening chandeliers and seaside beach huts (you can actually dine in them!), we watched the food being served and our mouths watered.
We were so tempted to choose main meals, but were unable to narrow down our choices – I fancied the Fish Chowder in Sour Dough Bread Bowl, but then the Beef Bourguignon Pie caught my eye. Which is why we plumped for the tapas option - our very own grazing plate.
I'm embarrassed to say that our table was groaning with food - stilton chips, winter pigs in duvets, goats cheese fritters, avocado and prawn in taco bread, cod fish finger in paprika batter, superfood salad and, of course, the obligatory mushy peas - all in small tapas sized portions. A-mazing! This was all washed down with chilled Prosecco (they have a fab Gin menu!). And, would you believe we found room to share a dessert - ice cream with double cream, sprinkles, raspberry sauce and chocolate flakes, doughnuts and candy floss. I know, I know - you're talking about me already! But you try choosing just one thing from the menu - it's impossible!
Around us, families were whooping as the children were served dinner in a bucket with a spade and groups of friends were all trying each others' food whilst insisting that they had still made the best menu choice. The staff were so friendly and smiley, making recommendations and turning a blind eye to the ridiculous amount of food we were stockpiling - it was hard to tear ourselves away.
So, in summary, George's is more than fish and chips - if you like a yummy British menu, created, cooked and served in spectacular fashion, with fish, meat and vegetarian choices, then this is for you. It is a restaurant that Nottingham should be proud of – echoes of The Ivy with their divine menu, but jam packed with grown up - and not so grown up - fun and personality.
