George's is bringing back good and proper fish and chips and other British favourites with a difference. From the beach huts to the gin bar, it is all part of the journey that you'll be taken on when you visit this city centre's restaurant.

We were invited to sample George's famous fish and chips last week, and were really looking forward to it. Read on to find out what we thought about our recent visit.

Kinga – It was my first time at George’s but I was told by my colleagues that I will really enjoy my visit, so the expectations were high.

We arrived just after five o’clock for an early dinner. It was Tuesday so we were expecting the restaurant to be quiet but the ground floor was quite lively when we got there. We were greeted by the friendly staff, promptly shown to our window seat table, and given the menus. When holding the menu, I couldn’t shake off the impression that I’m reading a newspaper at the comfort of my own house. The menu was really easy to go through, not too many complicated options, it was just right - and as I mentioned its texture reminded me of a newspaper which brought a homely feeling.

We decided to try some starters first and then go for the main course. I went for Goat’s Cheese Fritters to start. They were two goat’s cheese slices coated in smoked paprika batter, served with George’s house pickles, beetroot chutney, and parsley salad – all that drizzled with honey and sprinkled with paprika, yummy! I really enjoyed the starter and was looking forward to my main course. For my this I went for the traditional wild ocean cod served with twice cooked chips, mushy peas, chunky tartar sauce and a few pickles. When the main course arrived, I was really impressed with the size of the cod, it was massive! It was in this moment that I knew I wasn't going home hungry. The chips looked really good as well, they were nice and chunky. The cod was one of the best I’ve ever had and even though it was massive I nearly finished it all - the power of tasty cod is impressive. I couldn’t make any more space for the dessert though, but if I did I bet it would have been as delicious as both the started and the main course.

I really enjoyed my meal at George's, the staff were really friendly and welcoming and the service was quick. This and the amazing food made the experience one to tell my friends about. We've already booked a table for next week. See you again very soon George's!

Alex – Fish and chips has always been a favourite meal of mine so when we were invited to go for a meal at George’s, I was super excited and had high expectation as I’d heard good things!

The interior of the restaurant is quirky, with a nautical theme throughout.  During busier periods, there is the option to sit upstairs in little beach huts.  We were shown to our seats promptly and our waitress for the evening was friendly and polite.

I chose to have the katsu chicken goujons and they were amazing!  The katsu sauce was incredibly tasty and the chicken goujons were delicious.  The portion size was perfect too – enough for you to enjoy but not too much that you’d be too full to enjoy your main course.

For main course it just had to be a fish dish so I went for scampi and chips with a side of mushy peas – has to be done when having fish and chips!  The chips were everything I hoped they would be – chunky, fluffy on the inside and ever so slightly crispy on the outside, and plenty of them.  The scampi had a really unique flavoured batter (lemon pepper, which I know doesn’t sound that unique but it really did bring a different flavour to the party) and was thoroughly enjoyable. Awesome mushy peas too, which were served in a cute little jar.

I just about managed to save room for dessert so went for the ice cream, which according to the menu, is served with Chantilly cream and a unique topping – intriguing!  The unique topping was in fact a huge ball of pink candy floss, which was great.  The Chantilly cream wasn’t really to my taste but the vanilla ice cream was really tasty.

My evening at George’s was fab.

George’s is open every day, and is conveniently located at the Old Market Square, just a stone throw away from the Council House and the Brian Clough’s statue. Find out more about George's and check out their lunch and dinner menus.
