If someone asked you, “How would you like to walk around a dark room, blindfolded with a futuristic backpack on for 15 minutes”, what would you say? No? Let me rephrase that. How would you like to explore a world where up is down and down is up, where the laws of physics are optional, where flying whales and parrot rays have replaced the birds and glowing blue orbs guide you ultimately to an ancient alien temple?

The last time I went to the races was as a child with my family. I remember the hustle and bustle of it all, the suits, the bookies on their stalls, the thudding of hooves and asking my Dad if we could go right up to the track and watch the thoroughbreds sprint past the finishing post. It was quite the treat then, to make the trip to the Southwell Autumn Floodlit Flat Races - so I was delighted to be given the opportunity to visit again.

Halfway between the heady summer evenings and the festive December cheer, this time of year can be a bit dismal. But some places are welcoming the darker nights, flinging their doors wide open of an evening instead of shutting the world away. Rufford Abbey has recently launched something called the "Spectacle of Light", which promises an “amazing illuminated trail” and a “magical after-dark adventure”.

The Engine Yard is one of our favourite places to go for a bit of fresh air, so when Visit Nottinghamshire started hearing stories about the latest addition to the village – the intriguingly named Balloon Bar – we couldn’t resist dropping by to find out whether the hype was deserved or whether it was all just a load of hot air.
