We took a trip out to Nottingham Lakeside Arts for a festive afternoon outing to see their Christmas play Red Riding Hood, an imaginative retelling of the classic tale from Olivier award-winning writer Mike Kenny.

14th December 2018 marks the date in British history when some women were able to go to the ballot boxes for the first time and cast their vote in the General Election after the passing of the Representation of People Act. Exactly 100 years later, Nottingham pays tribute to suffragette Helen Kirkpatrick Watts with the unveiling of a stone plaque in the city’s Arboretum to celebrate her involvement and achievements.

Visit Nottinghamshire headed to the Nottingham Tourism Centre for the opening of the Bands FC exhibition (open from 1 - 14 December). Bands FC is a stunning and innovative art project celebrating two of the world’s favourite things – football and music. They’ve designed over 400 badges incorporating the world’s most popular bands into football’s most iconic club crests, and have gained over 42,000 followers on Twitter since summer 2018. We went to meet the creators of the concept – Nick Fraser and Mark Liptrott – as they were setting up.

Whilst the Workhouse has been open for the public to explore since 2002, the adjacent Firbeck Infirmary has remained largely off-limits to the public, save for a small section housing the café and staff offices. In years gone by, this infirmary housed various vulnerable groups including the ill, the mentally infirm, the elderly and children. It hides a wealth of its own stories and secrets within its walls, but has lain empty and untouched for a decade, a century of history gradually fading into the dust. But this is about to change...

Two days after the release of the latest Robin Hood film, Visit Nottinghamshire were invited to experience the Robin Hood Medieval Banquet; an opportunity to bring the age-old rebel to life once again and witness his medieval ways in a lively evening of drinking, dining and spirited shenanigans.

We’re definitely feeling the Christmas spirit as we approach advent, and there are plenty of events across Nottinghamshire to get you in good cheer as the festive season starts. Throughout December some of our most scenic country houses, castles and ducal estates are transformed with Christmas magic and host some fabulously festive events, including Wollaton Hall, Newstead Abbey, Chatsworth House and Bolsover Castle to name but a few.
